Fire Forensics Engineer

We are seeking a California licensed mechanical or electrical engineer to conduct engineering investigations of products and structure fires. Strong understanding of gas and electrical product and structure systems will be required. Strong thermal/fluids and electrical circuit analysis skills are a must. An industry background in product design and testing is desired. Fire causation most often involves multiple physical phenomena, therefore an interest and capabilities in various aspects of science and engineering is a must.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct laboratory inspection of gas and electrical products evidence.  Such work will require the use of cameras, power tools, x-ray, microscope equipment, DAQ systems, gas and electronic test equipment.
  • Travel within Southern California region to examine and photo document fire scenes, structural gas & electrical systems, vehicles and to collect scene evidence.
  • Conduct witness interviews with regards to the failures of products and structure components.
  • Setup electrical, gas and plumbing system tests within the laboratory and in the field.
  • Create fire and thermal model computer simulations to aid in the analysis, support and presentation of fire origin & cause.
  • Carry out hand calculations, spreadsheet analyses and numerical analyses in regards to heat transfer and electrical circuit analysis.
  • Write engineering analysis reports in regards to product and structure defect investigations.
  • Interact with insurance and legal representatives involved in claims processing and litigation.
  • Sit for deposition and trial testimony as it relate to fire case litigation.

Requirements:

  • Strong mechanical and electrical systems skills and familiarity
  • California engineering license; additional Nevada engineering license is a plus
  • Background and experience in the design, construction and testing of electronic components
  • Electromechanical systems design, construction and testing experience.
  • Product temperature, environmental exposure and wear testing experience
  • Strong thermal, electronic circuit, stress and combustion analysis skills
  • Power tool usage
  • Able to remove appliance and structural items from fire loss sites
  • Maintaining inspection and reporting schedules
  • Engineering software and internet research skills
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills
  • Possession of a pickup truck or cargo van is a plus

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to stand on one’s feet for prolonged periods of time
  • Able to lift and/or move objects weighing 50-100 lbs
  • Able to climb onto first and second story roofs, ascend/descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, etc.
  • Able to negotiate fire damaged structures safely
  • Able to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Able to reach with hands and arms

Evidence/Engineering Support Technician

We are seeking a technician to maintain and manage an evidence storage warehouse as well as offer technical support in laboratory testing and evidence inspections. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintain case evidence inventory log and storage of evidence in warehouse rack systems
  • Travel within Southern California region to pickup and deliver evidence items. Some pickups will require the removal of plumbing, electrical and/or gas components.
  • Setup electrical, gas and plumbing system tests within the laboratory and in the field.
  • Aid in laboratory inspection of evidence.  Such work will require the use of power tools, camera and microscope equipment.
  • Maintaining cleanliness of warehouse and lab areas

Requirements:

  • Mechanical and electrical systems skills and familiarity
  • Power tool usage
  • Able to remove appliance and structural items from fire and water loss sites
  • Forklift use
  • Maintaining schedules and log books
  • Basic computer and internet usage skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Possession of a pickup truck or cargo van is a plus
